Climb to the Roof of Africa
Here is an itinerary for Kilimanjaro using the Shira Route and with an overnight stay in the Crater. It demonstrates the care and planning we devote to all of our holidays.

We provide a safety briefing, and check all equipment and dietary needs. We supply quality mountain tents, mattresses and sleeping bags, as well as backpacks and radios. We can accommodate parties of two or more, and each party is provided with a chief guide, an assistant guide, a cook, and as many porters as are necessary to carry excess baggage and all camping equipment - there will be at least three porters per party and there may even be as many as eight, even for a party of two. The trek is on a full board basis.

Day One
You will be met upon arrival at Arusha and transferred the short distance (7 kms) to Moivaro Coffee Plantation Lodge, nestled in the Moivaro Estate. You will have the afternoon free to relax in this peaceful setting, with views of Mount Meru, and time to enjoy a refreshing swim in the pool before you meet your mountain guide. He will assist you to prepare for your climb with a full briefing and supervised packing. Dinner and an overnight stay at the Moivaro Coffee Plantation Lodge will prepare you for the start of your adventure.

Day Two
After breakfast, you drive to Mooch on the western side of Kilimanjaro. The road begins with tarmac and then becomes murram as you cross a deep stream valley. Now the trekking begins through the Londorossi Gate and continues on to the glades, across a forest plantation, heath and moor. As you climb up through the forest, you catch your first glimpse of the mountain. You camp in mountain tents overnight at Shira Camp 1. Walking : approx 5 hours.

LeopardDay Three
From Shira Camp 1, you trek across the Shira Plateau to Fischers Camp (12,500 ft) where you camp in mountain tents overnight. On the way to Fischers, you have magnificent views of the old Shira Crater which has now collapsed. The vegetation turns to heather moorland and you will see your first lobelia plants. Walking : approx 6 hours.

Day Four
From Fischers Camp, you climb to the Lava Tower (15,000 ft), either skirting it at the base or climbing to the top. The walk down from Lava Tower is through a stunning valley with mountain streams and waterfalls. There is a good chance of seeing the rare Lammergeier Vulture high up on the cliffs. You then continue to Barranco Hut (12,650 ft), where you camp in mountain tents overnight. Walking : approx 7 hours.

Day Five
From Barranco Hut, you climb up the Barranco Wall. A climb of 1,000 ft after breakfast is not as daunting as it sounds and the views of the glaciers and waterfalls are spectacular. This is considered the most scenic area of the mountain. You continue across three valleys with views towards Kibo. This is also where you will find the very large Lobelia plants. The overnight stay is in mountain tents at Barafu Hut, a campsite perched on the edge of the mountain. Walking : approx 8 hours.

Day Six
Today, you wake very early and climb to the outer crater rim of Kibo to reach Stella Point for sunrise. From here, you continue along the crater floor until you reach the Furtwangler Glacier at the bottom of the outer rim wall (18,680 ft), where you camp overnight in mountain tents. You may rest here and find shade from the afternoon sun or continue to trek within the Kibo Crater, walking to the top of the Reusch Crater, where you will be rewarded with a stunning view into the Ash Pit. Walking : approx 7 hours.

Day Seven
Climb from the Crater Camp to the summit! If any members of the group decide against ascending to Uhuru Peak, they can return across the crater floor and meet up with the others again at Stella or Barafu and then down to the Mweka Camp (9,600 ft). The overnight stay is in mountain tents.

Day Eight
Descend to the Mweka Gate, from where our vehicles return you to Moivaro Coffee Plantation Lodge for a hot shower and celebratory evening meal. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay.

Day Nine
You will be collected from Moivaro Coffee Plantation Lodge after breakfast and transferred to Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport.
