Botswana Safari From
the stark sand and savannahs of the Kalahari, dotted with desert palms and baobab trees, to the
lush wetlands of the Okavango Delta, Botswana is Africa at it's most striking and splendid.
The Okavango DeltaThe Okavango Delta is viewed by many as one of the great natural wonders of the world. Its islands and waterways cover 15,000 square miles. Rising high up in the Angolan mountains, the Okavanga River flows away from the sea and distributes its water into a vast area that would otherwise be desert. The result is an incredible wildlife environment. This unique habitat abounds with game and a phenomenal variety of birdlife. A stay at one of the lodges right at the heart of the Delta will never be forgotten. Gliding through crystal clear waters in a mokoro or dug-out canoe, you will spot fish eagles and glimpse the glinting purple and gold of malachite kingfishers flashing by. You can seek out the shy lechwe and sitatunga - antelopes that have adapted to this watery world. Lodges on Chief's Island and in the Moremi Wildlife Reserve offer walking and game drives with the opportunity of seeing the African Hunting Dog.
Jack's Camp and San CampJack's Camp and San Camp are unique in being the only permanent camps that can offer you a chance to explore and understand the Kalahari Desert. Traditionally styled African tents surrounded by palm trees give the camps a real ' Out of Africa ' feel. Many of the guides are trained zoologists and geologists, and they will give you an insight into the evolution of the desert and the origins of the Okavango Delta. Located alongside the Makgadikgadi National Park, you can focus on species of gemsbok, brown hyena and springbok that are unique to the area, as well as learning about of the geology, anthropology and archaeology of the Kalahari and Makgadikgadi. This is also one of Africa's most important wetland sites. As the wet season fills the pans with water, flocks of flamingoes and other migratory birds are attracted to the area. It is also one of the few places in Africa where you can still
witness the epic migrations of wildebeest and zebra, along with the predators who follow close
behind.
Chobe National ParkChobe National Park is found to the north east, in the land bordering Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia. A short drive from Victoria Falls, this park offers the chance to encounter a staggering variety of game. Its rivers teem with hippo and crocodile, its marshes are home to thousands of water birds, and its plains support buffalo, antelope and elephants in vast numbers. Perhaps one of the most charming sights you will find there are the Little Bee Eaters. These brightly coloured birds huddle together until the sun's first rays arrive to warm them up. |
